"Peter Gronquist’s 2013 installation “Self-Portrait,” at Brooklyn’s ArtNow NY. An effigy of the artist is suspended in midair after apparently being catapulted through the windshield of an actual car by the force of a head-on collision with a deer. A Converse sneaker has been knocked off one of his feet, and shards of glass hang ominously around him on strings. Gronquist explained that the project took months to complete, and involved finding the old car on Craigslist and discovering the difficulty of smashing it up (he showed ARTINFO footage of slamming it into a tree). Gronquist said the idea of depicting a crash as a self-portrait came to him in a near dream state several years ago, and is reminiscent of the way the creative process feels sometimes. The asking price on the work is $150,000.” - via blouinartinfo

See this and other pieces this Saturday evening at the FERAL CREATURES opening at moderneden in San Francisco.
This exhibition presents 10 contemporary artists whose inherent aesthetic employs beasts both fierce and docile as allegorical vehicles for life’s struggles and bliss. Each artist was chosen based on their natural mystique and ability to render beauty and grace with a skillful hand. By shining a spotlight on the wild, these artists allow the viewer to examine our reality through a broad tapestry of myth, imagination and animal behavior.
Featuring the talents of artists Michael Alm, JAW Cooper, Kikyz1313, Michael Page, Caitlin Hackett, Anita Kunz, Christina Mrozik, Jason Wheatley, Zoe Williams, and Peter Gronquist.

Selection from “Feather Collar” by artist Aaron Nagel (@aaronnagel). 24”x36” oil on canvas.
Aaron Nagel was born in 1980 in San Francisco, CA. He is a figurative oil painter who resides in Los Angeles, CA. Having received no formal training, he is entirely self-taught; a fact at odds with his classical approach to surrealism. In his current work, he explores specific themes of guilt and power, always associated with his views on the perils of organized religion and theism.

"Hillside and 179th - Queens 8-9pm" by artist Brett Amory (@BrettAmory). 86 x 90 inches
(218.44 x 228.60 cm) Oil on canvas.
Following his 2012 exhibition Twenty-Four in San Francisco, Amory spent a month in New York City, researching, photographing and filming various locations throughout the five boroughs to serve as reference material for his new series Twenty-Four in New York. The artist filmed a total of 40 locations, each in a one-hour increment at different times of day and night. Video footage of 24 locations will be projected in a grid of 24 frames in consecutive order beginning and ending with midnight. The hour-long intervals will run simultaneously, representing a full day in the city of New York.
Amory’s work portrays abstracted studies of urban life through fragmented cityscapes and anonymous, isolated figures. The exhibition includes twelve paintings documenting different locations throughout the city, some iconic institutions and others of the sadly, rapidly disappearing variety. The artist will also create a site-specific installation around one of the paintings, which incorporates a magazine stand with architectural components. #brettamory #art #artist #warholian #24inNY #painting #abstract #urban #painter #lifeinthestreets
"Lesser Kudu" by artist Peter Gronquist. (@petergronquist)
Mixed Media Sculpture, 60”x16”x55”
Artist statement: The evolution of desire through greed and consumerism is explored with a bit of irony and humor in the artist’s large-scale works, where taxidermied animals have their antlers sculpted into objects like replica weaponry or corporate logos, often before being gold-plated. The majestic beauty of the animals themselves sometimes stands at odds with the cold, sharp-edged beauty of glittering metal, but other works strike a softer chord.
Born in 1979, Peter Gronquist is a visual artist living in Portland, Oregon. Gronquist attended the School of Visual Arts for two years, after which he completed his Bachelors of Art at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001. Gronquist has exhibited in galleries across the West Coast and New York. #art #artist #petergronquist #sculpture #warholian

"Jaclyn Alderete and her solo show Indra’s Net" photographed by @mikecuffe at @moderneden Gallery.
Jaclyn Alderete is a San Francisco Bay Area artist, originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She draws her inspiration from many things; the human condition, social and environmental concerns and desert nostalgia. You can find her work at the Kaleid Gallery in San Jose, CA and the Cactus Gallery in Los Angeles.
Artist’s Exhibition Statement: “In ‘Indra’s Net’ I wanted to explore the ways in which people build and break boundaries between ourselves and our world. Our natural propensity to create artificial distinctions is eclipsed by our knack for finding connections through the means of vision, empathy, and insight. These are ideas I wanted to express both figuratively and conceptually. The depiction of reflected images within and around figures whose features are at once obscured and exaggerated, whose boundaries are at times undefined as they momentarily merge with their environment, delineates the pathways of our sometimes muddled perception. Contrasting with this is the imagery of fish, whose clear, ever-opened eyes are said to impart perpetual awareness to the unconscious. Fish, along with birds, are early and unambiguous indicators of the state of the environment which surrounds us, bestowing upon us a silent foresight.
This leads me to a desire to express themes of transformation, waking up, and coming into being. I believe the intrinsic need to communicate with, and find a connection to, the world around us plays a major role in my work.”
